With the launch of the MACRA reporting system, physician organizations are now responsible for the reporting of and their performance on many new quality and patient safety metrics. At this point, most people are focused on making sure that they have a reliable, easy-to-use EHR reporting system. Of course, this is a critical first step, but it’s not enough to be successful with the MACRA payment system.
There are four steps to success with MACRA:
In order to understand the impact of performance on reimbursements and how potential interventions could potentially change those outcomes, organizations need to have a modeling tool that can handle the complexities of how multiple variables interact with one another. For example, if there is an increase in utilization of a preventative service, how does that impact the capacity that is needed, resource and appointment utilization, access to care, and cost per patient?
These sorts of interactions are quite difficult to model without a sophisticated analytical tool, which is one area that simulation can be uniquely valuable. These are not independent factors and the feedback loops between one area (such as access) and another (such as cost) must be modeled in order to accurately project future quality and reimbursement impacts. Each of these measures below impact one another, and many are also tied individually to MACRA reimbursement adjustment rates. How do you quantify these at a local level?
